Thanks to the AkzoNobel’s pioneering efforts and great dedication to support culture and the arts, the AkzoNobel Art Foundation has been collecting art for more than 27 years. During these 27 years, there have been many changes and challenges, both in society as in the company. The office landscape has changed significantly. Individual offices made way to open-plan offices and flexible workplaces. Walls were replaced by glass partitions and acoustic screens. The AkzoNobel Head Office moved from Arnhem to Amsterdam and other locations in the Netherlands and abroad were closed in favor of a smaller office footprint. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, working from home has also taken off. As a result of these developments, there is simply less space within AkzoNobel's premises to display the collection.

For the past years, the rule has been not to sell of works from the collection and this rule still applies to AkzoNobel’s core collection. However, the fore mentioned changes and challenges have resulted in a necessary reassessment of the AkzoNobel art collection, so it remains fit for the future.

It has therefore been decided that some works of art are better off and better valued when they are sold. Some of these works are returning from other locations in the Netherlands, others were bought before the establishment of the Art Foundation in 1996, some were bought specifically for the vast amount of small personal offices in the early days of the collection. All the proceeds of this auction will go to charity.
